Models Wanted! How to create a great modeling portfolio!

Modeling requires dedication, passion, enthusiasm, and a great attitude. Model portfolios need to display some, or all, of these traits. I’ve been browsing a lot of model portfolios lately and I have some professional opinions to share.

1. You NEED at least one strong headshot. I need to see your face! It’s surprising how many models skip this in their portfolios when every single professional model management agency has headshots for every model. Get a great headshot done!

Do not use a cell phone selfie. Professional photographers know the difference and it makes you seem uninterested in professional photography.

Headshots are an industry standard, so, there is really no reason to not have a professional headshot done if you want to model.

2. Few model portfolio issues are worse than zero expression. Show some personality! Models need to change something every time the flash goes off. Depending on what you are shooting: it may be the entire pose, the tilt of your head, or simple things like raising an eyebrow, or changing the shape of your mouth. One of the reasons I use my daughter as a model so much is because she is fearless with expression.

Practice this in a mirror. Call your best friend and talk about something you both like or dislike. Watch your expressions in a mirror while you talk. You will see that you have a huge array of expressions. Show that range in your portfolio.

3. Go for versatility in your modeling portfolio. Some male photographers will hate me for saying this, but, we don’t need to see you in every piece of underwear you own. Unless you want to specialize in lingerie modeling that is completely unnecessary.

Take out five different outfits that you love and use those. Go with: jeans and t-shirt, classy dress, bathing suit, business type attire, casual fun outfit, etc.

Lingerie and nude modeling are fine areas to work in, but, versatility will land more modeling jobs so don’t pigeonhole yourself without a good reason.

4. You don’t have to ‘look’ like a model so don’t be shy if you are not the stereotypical size and shape.

Personally, I love people that have character. Give me short, tall, and plus size models, or male models over 50 any day! Knowing who you are, and being comfortable in your own skin, shines in front of the camera.

5.    Once you get a nice group of photos start sharing them! Model Mayhem is a great website to start with. I’m a very new user on there but if you are in Sussex County connect with me: http://www.modelmayhem.com/3974101

So, take a good look at your portfolio and compare those images to a top modeling agency's images. Critique what you have and see where you need improvements.
